Parents Charged After Infant Found With Several Fractures: Burlington Police

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Burlington Police say two parents were charged this week after a 5-week-old infant was found to have several fractures in its body. 

Heather Derendal and Jeffrey Morales were charged with Felony Child Abuse and Felony Child Neglect over the weekend as the result of an ongoing investigation. 

Derendal was taken into custody on Wednesday. Morales was arrested on Thursday. 

Both are in the Alamance County Jail. Morales was also served an additional warrant for Assault on a Government Official and Resist, Obstruct, Delay a Law Enforcement Officer. He received a $260,000 secured bond for all charges. Derendal received a $200,000 secured bond. 

Police say the infant was treated at UNC Hospital in December after being taken to a pediatrician. At the hospital, the infant showed multiple fractures. The infant is recovering now and is in DSS custody.
