Pool Risks: Keep Sick Kids from Getting Worse

The CDC reports over 27,000 people got sick from contaminated pools between 2000 and 2014.

The Center for Disease Controls wants to remind parents (and really everyone); don't swim if you have diarrhea and don't swallow the water.

Now that we all have that visual burned into our brains...

You know pool season is upon us and the CDC reports over 27,000 people got sick from contaminated pools between 2000 and 2014. So, here's a few things Consumer Reports wants us all to keep in mind.

Pools can carry parasites which leads to stomach bugs. And this parasite can live in a pool for days, even if it's properly maintained. So, if you're headed to the pool with your kids make sure you and them stay away from swallowing water. Make sure to keep sick kids out of the water and shower with soap and water before and after a swim.

Ear infection can also be a nasty side affect of an otherwise wonderful pool day. Try using swim caps or ear plugs when swimming. Also dry out ears with a towel or use ear drops to help get the rest of the water out.

And finally, drowning. We know it's the number one preventable death among children in America. It's quiet. It's quick. So pay attention to kids, even if they've had swim lessons. Put down the phone, fence in backyard pools and learn CPR.

Consumer Reports has a list of other things to remember during pool season.
