Wednesday's public safety press conference organized by the city of Winston-Salem touched on several topics around the area, notably the open case of Mary Magdalene Smith, who's been missing nearly two years.
Police are still asking for help in finding Smith.
In the first monthly public safety conference of the year Wednesday, Lieutenant Santos with Winston-Salem Police asked for the community's help in the case.
Smith, 63, was reported missing in May 2017 and last seen in March 2017 checking out of her room at the Motel 6 on N. Patterson Ave. Santos said the family has been contacted at least 48 times since her disappearance and that authorities will keep following up with them every 10 days. Police have followed multiple leads and tips that haven't gone anywhere.
"We feel that this case is important enough to the Smith family and our community to reach out to you one more time and share this information again to prompt any leads to help locate Miss Smith," Santos said.
Police Chief Catrina Thompson honored three fallen Winston-Salem Police Officers at the beginning of the briefing.
The news conference also touched on:
- Recent local car break-ins
- Home heating safety and the danger of carbon monoxide
- Cooking fires and how to prevent them
- The terrorism grant that Emergency Management received from the Department of Homeland Security
