Two Firefighters Sent to Hospital in Mount Airy Fire

Firefighters are battling a fire near the Mount Airy News building on Renfro Street.

MT. AIRY, NC (WFMY) - Firefighters battled a fire near the Mount Airy News building on Renfro Street Monday morning.

Surry County Emergency Services said about 12 fire units responded to the call that came in early Monday morning. Mt. Airy Fire Chief Zane Poindexter says the fire was accidental and caused by a bathroom fan on the second floor.

Two firefighters involved, one from a volunteer fire department in Cana, Va. and another from Mt. Airy, went to the hospital for heat exhaustion. They were both released and are expected to be okay.

Stokes Surry Alerts sent out this message saying the fire is on North Renfro street between East Independence Avenue and East Oak Street.

The old rope factory caught on fire early Monday morning.

The North Carolina Dept. of Insurance is investigating.
