UNC Coach Sylvia Hatchell: "Cancer Is Gone"

After temporarily stepping down in 2013 after being diagnosed with leukemia, Coach Hatchell says she's cancer free.
Hatchell tells WFMY the cancer is gone and she's back to coaching.

ID=8497583GREENSBORO, NC— One of the winningest coaches in the NCAA walked off the court in 2013 to face the biggest fight of her life.

She was diagnosed with leukemia, and now Coach Hatchell says she's cancer free.

It came as a shock for many fans. It even came as a shock for players.

In mid-October, Sylvia Hatchell announced that she was diagnosed with leukemia and was temporarily stepping down. Associate head coach Andrew Calder led the team in the 2013-2014 season.

Since then, Hatchell has been through chemotherapy and now her illness is in remission.

[ID=8498075]WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford got the chance to talk to Coach one on one at the Tar Heel Tour in Greensboro Tuesday night.

"I'm great and it's over. I just got to keep working hard and get my strength built back up," said Hatchell.

Hatchell said she relied on her faith and mental strength to fight the disease.

"It was like a tsunami hitting me and it is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. The last 7 months have been absolutely incredible."
