VERIFY: Why Do Some Expectant Dads Feel 'Pregnant,' Too?

Why do some dads gain weight and feel pregnancy symptoms when their female partners are pregnant?

VERIFY QUESTION

Have you ever heard of the "dad bod?" Some people describe it as the heavy-set physique a man might obtain during or after his partner's pregnancy. It is something that can be explained with common sense -- a pregnant woman is eating for two, so perhaps the man over-indulges, too.

That makes sense. But, how is it possible for some men to experience real pregnancy side effects -- like nausea and cramping? Apparently, it's happening, and there are articles all over the internet about it. So, we set out to VERIFY.

VERIFY SOURCE

We reached out to Novant Health ObGyn, Thomas Valaoras, MD. And, we consulted Mayo Clinic.

VERIFY PROCESS

Dr. Valaoras explained there is a medical condition called "couvade syndrome," also known as a sympathetic pregnancy. It is a proposed condition where a partner experiences some of the same behavior and symptoms as an expectant mother. Dr. Valaoras said there is debate about whether couvade syndrome has psychomatic or physiological origins.

Physical symptoms could include bloating, nausea, heartburn, cramps and abdominal pain. Psychological symptoms could include anxiety, depression, restlessness or chance in sleeping patterns.

VERIFY CONCLUSION

Couvade syndrome exists, but Mayo Clinic says it is not a recognized disease or mental illness. And, it typically happens only in the first and third trimesters.

Dr. Valaoras agrees it is hard to say with certainty that some men gain weight and have pregnancy symptoms solely because their partners are pregnant. Regardless, being a new parent is stressful, so do what you can to manage that stress and get prepared beforehand.
