'We Get To Do This' | Mt. Zion Baptist Church Donates $40K To Bennett College

The donation was the largest Bennett College has received from any religious organization.

GREENSBORO, North Carolina — Mount Zion Baptist Church donated $40,000 to Bennett College Sunday morning.

"Part of our mission is to give back and serve our city," said Mount Zion Director of Marketing James Brooks. "Why not help them in their time of need, just like we would help anyone else."

Bennett College President Dr. Phyllis Worthy-Dawkins, SGA President Alexis Branch and Vice President of Institutional Advancement Danny Gatling all attended Sunday's service.

Senior Pastor Bishop Bryan J. Pierce Sr. made the announcement.

"We do this not because we have to, but because we get to," Pierce said. "We get to do this."

In December, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges announced the all-girls HBCU would be removed from its membership due to financial instability and enrollment struggles.

Bennett hopes to raise five million dollars to help keep its doors open. The college is retaining its accreditation as it appeals the decision.
