Suspect steals officer's gun, shoots self in head at Brandywine Country Club

The suspect stole the officer's gun and was later found on the golf course with a gunshot wound to the head.

PENINSULA, Ohio -- A suspect is dead after he shot himself in the head with an officer's gun early Wednesday.

According to the Summit County Sheriff's Office, a Peninsula police officer responded to a report of damaged property at Brandywine Country Club on Akron-Peninsula Road around 5:19 a.m.

When the officer arrived, he encountered the 24-year-old suspect on the country club property. The suspect struck the officer on the head and knocked him to the ground. As the officer regained full consciousness, the suspect stole his gun from its holster.

An employee who witnessed the assault attempted to help the officer while the suspect fled on foot. A short time later, the officer and employee heard a gunshot.

When additional officers responded to the scene, they set up a perimeter around the golf course and later found the suspect on the course with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Akron General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officer was treated and released from Akron General Hospital.

The incident remains under investigation and the suspect's name has not been released.
