Race for the Triad: Manning, Haywood win 6th District primaries

The Triad is getting a new Congressman or Congresswoman this November.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — The race for the Triad is on. Kathy Manning (D) and Lee Haywood (R) lead the primary polls for their respective parties and will go head-to-head this November to claim a seat in the US House of Representatives.

Up for grabs is North Carolina's newly redrawn district 6.

"This is a great district - this is a Triad district that makes sense because we've got all of Guilford County, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point in one district and those are communities that have so much in common - common strengths and common issues that need to be addressed," said Manning.

Manning says she plans to focus on accessible healthcare, investing in schools and teachers, raising the minimum wage, women's health, and climate change.

On the other side of the aisle, Haywood thinks he's the man for the job. The small business owner has lived in the Triad for more than 40 years. He says there are three issues that people in the Triad care about: healthcare, housing, and hunger, and he will do his best to address those issues.

"I am excited to get started on the next chapter of this campaign, but more than that, I am humbled that for the people that have wrapped their arms around me in my campaign, and have helped me out the past few weeks and made this all possible," said Haywood.

If elected, Haywood says he wants to focus on reducing the national debt, finishing the border wall with Mexico, and giving states more power when it comes to education.

Incumbent Mark Walker (R-NC) has held the seat since 2015 but chose not to run for reelection because of the newly drawn congressional lines

"I just didn’t think it’d be wise to spend the resources from the campaign side that people had invested in us for a race that mathematically would be impossible for a republican to win," Walker told WFMY News 2 back in December.

State judges approved a new map of the district last year. The district now includes all of Guilford County and part of Forsyth County, whereas before, it included parts of Guilford, Alamance, Randolph, Rockingham, Caswell, Chatham, Lee and Person counties.

District 6 has been held by a Republican since 1985, but political experts believe the newly redrawn lines could favor a democrat.
