CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A stretch of The Plaza in east Charlotte was shut down after a fatal accident, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Officers responded to reports of a hit and run car crash just after 9 p.m. Saturday near The Plaza and Anderson Street. A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle, CMPD said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
CMPD has identified him as Karim Abdul Akbar, 62.
The vehicle was traveling northeast on the Plaza in the right lane when it struck the bicyclist who was crossing the road, police said. The bicyclist and bike were thrown off the road and landed in the grass near the sidewalk.
The driver of the vehicle did not stop or notify emergency services of the crash.
When officers arrived they located an unresponsive bicyclist not wearing a helmet.
Fire and Medic also were at the scene. The bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene by Medic.
During the investigation, The Plaza was shut down between Anderson Street and Dade Street.
At this time, it's not known if the driver of the vehicle is facing any charges. Their name has not been released.
