CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Another leader is stepping down in our state...UNC Charlotte's Chancellor Phillip Dubois says he plans to retire next June.

Our sister station in Charlotte reported on Tuesday that Philip Dubois disclosed his decision in an email sent to the campus. He called his message "bittersweet."

Dubois first came to UNCC in 1991 as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, then left in 1997 to serve as president of the University of Wyoming before returning in 2005 to become UNCC's fourth chancellor.

While Dubois led the school through a period of growth, he also guided the Charlotte school last April after a shooting inside a classroom building that killed two students. Dubois was president of the University of Wyoming when it drew national attention for the 1998 slaying of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay student.
