Forget The ‘Pony Express’ Nebraska Has Flying ‘Sheep Shuttle’

It was surely a spectacle in the sky as a helicopter flew up to four sheep on a line.

CHADRON, Neb. — It’s not every day that you see a flock of flying sheep. But that’s exactly what happened as helicopter crews rounded up a herd of wild bighorn sheep in Chadron, Nebraska.

It was more like “baa-baa” instead of “giddy-up” as wildlife professionals and volunteers from South Dakota State University and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission captured 48 sheep over two days.

It was surely a spectacle in the sky as a helicopter flew up to four sheep on a line.

The effort is all to protect the sheep by keeping them healthy by preventing a type of pneumonia that spread by sheep. The sheep received new tracking collars, ear tags, and a series of vaccinations before they were replaced back in the wild.

The helicopter crew is now working to capture mule deer for a new study led by the University of Nebraska.
