The "compliment" text I received.

Have you gotten a text message recently that says you received a compliment?

The text message reads: "Someone complimented you! See more on IRL."

It then prompts IOS and Android users to click on a specific link to see this "compliment."

I got this text and my immediate thought was - spam or scam.

It turns out the link leads you to your app store to download an app called IRL or "In Real Life." And yes, it's a real app. But there are some things you need to know.

On its frequently asked questions, IRL says it is an app that allows you to send and receive invites to hang out with friends in real life, but it requires you to give up some information in order to use the app.

IRL's website says you have to provide your phone numbers, contacts, and email. It also says it may collect information on you like your interests and GPS location, which could be obtained through an IP address.

IRL's website says you get the "compliment" text because other people who use the app have your number in their contact list.

Your best bet if you don't know the number -- just ignore and delete it. And with any apps, know what you're opting into and what information you're giving up.
