"I had to look at it two or three times," Yates said. "I couldn't believe it! I had the lottery app, so I took out my phone to scan the ticket. When it said, 'Claim at lottery headquarters,' I knew it was real."

RALEIGH – Bradley Yates of Danbury can buy and drink all the Cheerwine drinks he can handle after a recent trip to the store ended with a lottery win.

Yates told NC Education lottery officials he was on his way home Friday and stopped to get a Cheerwine because he wanted something to drink. While at the store he bought a Platinum Scratch-off ticket and won $100,000!

Yates said he bought the ticket at Barham Grocery on U.S. 158 in Summerfield.

“I had to look at it two or three times,” Yates said. “I couldn’t believe it! I had the lottery app, so I took out my phone to scan the ticket. When it said, ‘Claim at lottery headquarters,’ I knew it was real.”

Yates claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $70,507. He plans to use some of the money to pay medical bills.
