This Memorial Day honor those who died in battle and because of it

22 veterans die by suicide every day. Help is out there. You can always call 988 to talk.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Memorial Day is a day to remember those lost in the line of the duty, and on the Good Morning Show we heard a new take on the day to also consider. One Triad mother's story was so powerful, I had to share it with you too. I must warn you, this one is tough to hear. But it's important.

Stephanie Maner's son, Nickolas, fought in Afghanistan in 2011. His division lost six members. When Nickolas got back things were different.

"We didn't talk a whole lot about it, he didn't want to," Stephanie said. "I think there were certain things he saw, there were certain things he had to do, he just kept it all bottled up inside."

After fighting PTSD for 6 years, Nickolas killed himself. One of 22 veterans that commit suicide every day according to the Military Veteran Project.

Just because our troops come home from conflict doesn't mean the conflict goes away for them.

There are lots of great resources to help. You can find them all by searching for PTSD on wfmynews2.com. And if you ever need to talk, call the crisis lifeline at 988.

Our brave men and woman risk so much to protect us. So this Memorial Day we honor those who died in battle, we also should pause to remember those who died because of the battle.
