DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski has pledged to donate $3 million to a cause that he holds close to his heart.
Krzyzewski and his wife, Mickie, will donate the money to a three-year, $15 million fundraising campaign for the Emily K Center in Durham.
Coach K is founder and board chair of the Center, which is named after his late mother. The Center is meant to help low-income students and families on their journey to college.
The "Game Changer Campaign" will allow the Center to enhance its current programs and build a 4,500-square foot addition at the current facility.
The Krzyzewski's $3 million donation, which is the couple's largest philanthropic contribution ever, brings the overall fundraiser to a total of $8 million.
“The Emily Krzyzewski Center is incredibly important to Mickie and me. It is named after my mom, and she was the best person I knew. Amazing things happen at the Center and Mickie and I are thrilled to be able to make this commitment and this gift,” Krzyzewski said.
