GREENSBORO, N.C. -- We all know those three numbers by heart, but Guilford Metro 911 says some people call for the wrong reasons.

Guilford Metro 911 says many people call to report power outages, and ask when the power will be turned back on. Don't do that!

Duke Energy handles power outages. You can call 1-800-POWER-ON (1-800-769-3766) to report any power issues.

If you call 911 for power issues, you could be taking away precious time from responding to real emergencies.

"The biggest reason people call during storms is because people want to report their power is out," Paige Cummings, Senior Supervisor at Guilford Metro 911 said. "I understand that’s an emergency but its not a 911 emergency that anyone with the Police, Fire, EMS or 911 personnel can handle."

Any car accidents, water rescues, downed trees that pose a threat, downed electrical lines and so forth can absolutely be reported to be 911.

"The most important thing to remember in storms and any time is that 911 is reserved for life and death emergencies," Cummings said.

For anything that is not life or death, you can call the nonemergency line at 336-373-2222.
