NC State's Sam Hunt Offers Tornado Relief In Greensboro

The Dudley High School alum worked with other athletes and friends to go door-to-door and help his neighbors in need.

GREENSBORO, NC. -- When Dudley High School alum Sam Hunt saw the aftermath of a tornado that ripped through his hometown, he knew immediately that he had to help.

"To see it [Greensboro] like this, to see the damage it's caused, people can't really move out their houses, if they want to drive, they can't really drive," Hunt said. "So, it's a crazy feeling to actually see it and be here in the midst of it."

Hunt and his hometown friend Chauncey Carter organized a relief effort on Wednesday. They took a group of athletes and community members around Northeast Greensboro to help clean up after Sunday's tornado. They went door to door offering food, hygiene products and help to anyone who needed it.

"It [the aftermath] touched me tremendously, and I just wanted to see if I could put my effort in and do something to help the city out," he said.

Hunt also called on two other NC State alums, Lennard Freeman and BeeJay Anya.

"Me and Sam, we go way back," Anya said. "And, when he told me what he was doing, I couldn't help but say, 'yeah, I'm all in.'"

Norman Brown was one of the many people in Greensboro impacted by the storm. And Wednesday, Hunt and his group brought Brown some of the supplies he needed.

"It means to me that there are people out here who are generous with their heart and spirit, and they just don’t like to see people in need like we are," Brown said. "Because we haven’t been able to get out of the neighborhood for a while."

Hunt says he's giving back simply because he loves his home.

"We call it 'East Strong,'” he said. "It’s Greensboro, our city, it means the world to us. We take pride in just taking care of everything."
