Teams Gather to Pray for Southwest Guilford Player After Hitting His Head on Floor

Christian Martin was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, where he stayed overnight for observations.

HICKORY, N.C. — Southwest Guilford rolled Cox Mill to win the 3A west region basketball final Saturday, but their jubilation was tempered when a key starter went down with a scary injury. 

Senior Christian Martin took a nasty fall during the game and appeared to hit his head and shoulder on the floor. Martin went up to try to dunk the ball and lost control of his body.

Martin was down for a while and teams gathered at halfcourt to pray for him. Martin was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, where he stayed overnight for observation. Southwest coach Guy Shavers said Martin was resting comfortably and his family was in good spirits on Sunday.

A GoFundMe has been created on Martin's mothers behalf for medical costs.

The page states Martin was transferred to Baptist Hospital on Tuesday.

The Cowboys beat Cox Mill 88-58 and will face Walter Wiliams in next weekend's state championship.
