WSSU Volleyball Player Writes ‘Puerto Rico' On Shoes For Family And Victims

A student-athlete at Winston-Salem State University is worried about her family in Puerto Rico.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A student-athlete at Winston-Salem State University is worried about her family in Puerto Rico.

Michelle Murray-Garcia is a senior on the volleyball team and was born in Puerto Rico. She said she was only able to get in contact with her brother recently, who still lives there.

“It's the not knowing and then the only thing that I was able to see was the pictures. All I saw was the disaster. So it's like, it's just a lot of things were going through my mind like are they okay? Do they have food? Do they have water? Were they prepared?”

Murray-Garcia said her family is safe. She now has the words Puerto Rico written on her volleyball shoes as a tribute to the victims.

She said the team is planning to put together a supply drive to help out.
