New Food App Helps Limit Food Waste

The app is an easy resource for low-income families, college students, and others in need.

Around 40 percent of the food Americans buy ends up in the trash. Food waste is a global issue but an American now living in Britain is trying to change that.

"Anyone who has food they’re not going to eat just takes a picture and uploads it, and it immediately alerts people nearby that delicious food's available,'' Said Saasha Celestial-One founder of the Olio app.

From there, anyone on the app can then pick-up the free food and arrange a time and place for pickup.

'It's a profoundly human thing to hate letting food go to waste because that's obviously something valuable. And that joy of giving something of value to another human is really special,'' said Celestial-One.

The app is an easy resource for low-income families, college students, and others in need.

Saira Tamboo started using the Olio app last year in order to donate her extra food.

''If you've got the item there, within a minute or so it can be posted. And within minutes as well you can have someone coming to collect it," said Tamboo.

Saasha encourages others who may be a little leery of the app to give it try.

''I would encourage anyone who's maybe a bit skeptical to add something to the app and wait for the magic to happen.''
