Two police vehicles blocked West Gate City Blvd at Romaine Street near Merritt Drive on Oct. 22, 2021, after a deadly single-car crash.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A crash early Friday morning left one person dead and hundreds of people without power in Greensboro.

The crash was reported at 2:49 a.m. along West Gate City Boulevard. The road was closed between Romaine Street and Merritt Drive for hours and more than 800 customers were without power.

The driver of the car was taken to a hospital but did not survive, police said.

He has been identified as Jose Rodriguez, 20, of Greensboro.

Police said the driver may have been speeding and hit a power line, knocking it to the ground. Pictures from our photographer at the crash, showed a black car on its side, orange cones and two police SUVs blocking the wreckage.

West Gate City Boulevard was closed for several hours but has since reopened, according to police.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Duke Energy reported power would be restored at 9:30 a.m. but as of 8:30 a.m., street lights in the area were working and many buildings had power.
