Man arrested in deadly hit-and-run outside High Point church parking lot

Police said the victim was pulling out of Korean American Presbyterian Church of Greater Greensboro when he was hit by a car going 82 mph.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point police have charged a man in a deadly hit-and-run that happened Sunday night outside a church. 

Police said Raeshaun S. Smith was driving 82 mph when he crashed into a Honda Accord driven by 70-year-old Gwon Yong Hwan. Hwan was pulling out of the parking lot of Korean American Presbyterian Church of Greater Greensboro on Johnson Street. Police said Hwan died at a hospital. 

Police said after the crash, Smith ran away from the scene to his home. They said he eventually returned and informed officers that he was the driver of the car. 

Smith faces several charges including misdemeanor death by vehicle and felony hit and run. Police said when they contacted Smith, he turned himself in.
