GREENSBORO, N.C. — A vehicle collision causing injuries has led authorities to close down a portion of Interstate 40 in Greensboro for several hours on Saturday, and the road is not expected to open until around 12 p.m., according to officials.
Just after 4 a.m., the Greensboro Police Department reported that I-40 Westbound at Randleman road was shut down due to a "vehicle collision involving injury."
The NC Department of Transportation sent several updates throughout the morning. The latest update around 6 a.m. said that all lanes of I-40 West are closed at Exit 221 (South Elm Eugene St) in Greensboro due to the crash. The road is expected to reopen by 9 a.m., NCDOT said.
The portion of I-40 West closed is in between the Walmart Supercenter and the intersection with I-85.
WFMY News 2 viewers report the road closures caused traffic backups.
Details about the number of vehicles involved and extent of injuries are not known at this time.
NCDOT added that drivers are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and use the following detour: Take I-40 West / I-85 South Exit 131 for I-85 South. Continue on I-85 South to Exit 121 for I-74 West. Continue on I-74 West to re-access I-40 West.
