Red Cross Shelter in Winston-Salem Closing Monday

A Triad shelter for evacuees will close tomorrow. People staying at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem have until 4 PM to find another place to go.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WFMY)-- A Triad shelter for evacuees will close tomorrow. People staying at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem have until 4 PM to find another place to go.

Crystal Rainey, her husband and six kids have been staying at the Red Cross shelter in Winston-Salem for more than a week now.

"With kids it's kind of hard. Its tough because it puts more stress on the parents you know. And the kids want to be kids. We can't, they can't be kids," said Rainey.

At one point, the LJVM Coliseum was sheltering more than 400 Florence evacuees. Now there's only a few dozen evacuees left, many have headed home to stay with family and friends.

"That's really our goal when we start going into recovery is how can we get folks closer to home, so that they have not only the many resources they'll need to begin recovery, but also their own personal support networks," said Jaici Murcia, American Red Cross Shelter Team Leader.

Shelter guests were given food, hygiene products and comfort packages to take with them.

"I think there were definitely some tense moments. You know when you have buses of people coming here after having suffered the tragedies they have. Just wanting to make sure we could give them everything we had and bring the community together around helping them with their recovery," said Murcia.

For Rainey, there's still a long road to recovery ahead. She's headed back to their home in Thomasville with her husband, but with no power or water, her kids will be staying with her mom. .

"It's heartbreaking, like it's really heartbreaking. We love our kids. We are very family oriented and it's, it's gonna be hard," said Rainey.

If people can't find a place to go, the Red Cross will transfer them to a shelter in Chapel Hill.
