Student Bitten By Dog At Hanes Magnet School In Winston-Salem

A joint investigation is being conducted with Forsyth County Animal Control to determine if any criminal charges will be sought against the dog's owner.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (WFMY) -- A student was bitten by a dog at Hanes Magnet School on Thursday.

The Winston-Salem Police Department's School Resource Officer at Hanes Middle School was alerted that there were two dogs running on the grounds near the ball field and that an 11-year-old student had been bitten. Police say the dog that bit the student was a pitbull.

The resource officer who was in the area reported to the school and helped staff remove students from danger.

As students were brought inside, one of the dogs near the ball field aggressively charged the supervisor.

The Sergeant discharged two rounds from his issued firearm at the charging dog.

Both rounds struck the dog, which then turned and fled the area.

The dog was later found on Marble Street nearby the school and was secured until Animal Control Officers arrived on scene.

The owner of the dog was identified as Mr. Luis Munos. He has been cited for G.S. 67-4.3 'Did own a dangerous dog that attacked a person and caused physical injury.'

Ms. Lauren Anica was also cited for City Ordinance 6-2 - 'Unlawfully permit animals to run at large.'

Both Munos and Anica have a court date for January 7, 2019.

Forsyth County Animal Control fined Munos for their dog being loose and biting a human. The fines total $150 to be paid to Forsyth County Animal Control.

According to Winston-Salem Police, the dog was taken to a local emergency vet and euthanized at the owners request based on the injuries. By law, Animal Control sent the dog's body to be tested for rabies even though the dog's records indicate it was up to date on rabies vaccinations.

A joint investigation is being conducted with Forsyth County Animal Control to determine if any criminal charges will be sought against the dog’s owner.

The injured student received treatment at a local medical facility for minor injuries.
