Greensboro, N.C. -- He was more than just a coach.

Dudley high school legend Bill Boyers was a mentor and a friend. Boyers died last week. He worked at Dudley High School for at least 40 years.

Boyers was a state champion track coach. The track at the high school is named after him. He was also an assistant football coach.

Stahle Vincent played football for Boyers in 1969 but he and his coach stayed close. Vincent said they were chatting just days before Boyers died.

"The interesting thing about his passing is that i heard from athletes I competed against from other schools who called and expressed condolences because we all lost a great one when Mr. Boyers Died," Vincent said.

Boyers funeral is set for Saturday .
