NWS confirms EF-1 struck Rockingham County Friday night

Saturday afternoon, NWS Roanoke reported a long-tracked 7.9 mile tornado with a max-width of approx. 300 yards in Rockingham County, Friday.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — National Weather Service Roanoke survey team confirms an EF-1 tornado touched down in a wooded area southwest of Sunset View Road and moved northeast before lifting near the intersection of Crutchfield Road and US Highway 29 Business-- an estimated 7.9 mile track with a max-width of approximately 300 yards! That's nearly three football fields wide. The team reports the majority of the damage was to trees. There was also a report of minor damage due to roofing material blown off of a barn.

Downed trees, home damage, and hail were all reported as a severe storm rolled through Rockingham County late Friday evening. At 7:33 PM EST, NWS first issued a tornado warning for central Rockingham County after a tornado-producing storm was reported located over Intelligence near Madison. At 7:55 PM EST, the NWS issued another tornado warning after a confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado was located over Harrisons Crossroads or near Wentworth moving east at 25 mph. The warning was issued for nearly 30 minutes for folks in northeastern Rockingham County and northwestern Caswell County. The neighboring locations with possible impact included Reidsville, Wentworth, Mayfield, Quick, Oregon Hill, Harrison Crossroads, and Ruffin. 

One and a half-inch hail was reported in Wentworth and two-inch hail was reported in Ruffin. Trees were, also, reported uprooted and snapped in Reidsville, as well as, a roof was blown off. In Quick, power lines were reported blown by thunderstorms winds along Quick Road. The National Weather Service Office in Roanoke sent crews to Rockingham County around 8:30 am Saturday morning.
