'Two Months Worth of Rain' -- in Just 5 Hours in Greensboro

Slow moving thunderstorms dumped, and dumped, and dumped water across the Gate City. The flash flooding led to road closures and rescues.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Two months of rain hit parts of Greensboro in just five hours Wednesday night. Slow moving thunderstorms dumped, and dumped, and dumped water across the city -- hitting neighborhoods like Lindley Park, West Friendly, Latham Park, and Revolution Mill especially hard.

Thunderstorms developed over Guilford County around 4pm Wednesday, and have continued to dump heavy rain across Greensboro.

Through 9pm, many areas picked up 4-7 inches. 

"The storm just didn't move," said WFMY Chief Meteorologist Tim Buckley. "It's amazing how much rain fell in such a short period of time.

Buffalo Creek rose quickly to record levels, jumping from 2 feet in the afternoon to near 19 feet by 11pm. 

As of 8pm, some roadways that reported flooding include: 

  • Bryan Blvd. and Holden Rd. 
  • West Wendover Ave. and Bridford Pkwy
  • Murrow Blvd and Friendly Ave.
