What to do if a traffic signal loses power in North Carolina

Traffic light out? Treat it like a 4-way stop.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Many severe weather incidents could cause a traffic light to potentially lose power.

It is North Carolina law to come to a complete stop at a traffic sign that is dark or flashing red.

State law says drivers should proceed through the intersection "as though such intersection is controlled by a stop sign on all approaches to the intersection.”

When you approach the intersection, come to a complete stop and wait your turn.

Driving through an intersection without stopping during a signal outage is dangerous and against the law.

If a law enforcement officer is directing traffic, follow their commands.
