GREENSBORO, N.C. — Thursday morning the Greensboro Science Center (GSC) announced the death of maned wolf Nazca. Nazca was also the father of the newest litter of red wolf puppies.
GSC says Nazca had been coughing for a few weeks which raised some concerns with the animal care team. Over the weekend, noticeable swelling in his neck was observed and he was taken for an exam at the on-site veterinary.
There they heard wheezing, crackles and wet sound when listening to his lungs. Fluid was found Nazca's chest cavity and because of his age and advanced state of his illness, it was decided to humanely euthanize him.
GSC announced the puppies and shared photos of them earlier this week after their first medical check up.
