Corner Farmers Market Doubles Dollars During Government Shutdown

A Greensboro Farmers Market is helping federal workers and SNAP recipients stretch their dollars during the federal government shutdown.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — We are experiencing the longest federal government shutdown in history. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers haven't gotten a paycheck in the new year and many of them are struggling to put food on the table. SNAP recipients are also feeling the effects after the government told them to make their most recent payment last through the month of February.

The Corner Farmers Market in Greensboro is helping people affected stretch their dollar by doubling their money up to $50. That means people can purchase $100 worth of food for half the price.

The market typically doubles SNAP dollars up to $30 but in light of the shutdown they wanted to help more people and raise the limit. Customers can choose from local and organic produce, eggs, cheese, baked goods, protein and prepared items.

They're able to do this because of the Green for Greens program launched with grant from Cone Health in 2015. Anyone wishing to help supplement the program to help the market keep up with increased demand can make a tax-deductible donation to Green for Greens on www.cornermarketgso.com
