Popular Kernersville ‘Egg Church’ Erects Blessings Box For Those In Need

The Egg Church joins a list of other Triad churches and organizations who have started blessings boxes for the homeless and needy in their communities.

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – “Take what you need, give what you can.”

That's the message First Presbyterian Church of Kernersville, known as the ‘Egg Church,’ is delivering after erecting a ‘Blessings Box’ outside of its building for the first time.

Members of the church donated non-perishable food items to fill the box for members of the Kernersville community that may need them.

“This is a way for this church to reach the hungry in this community,” said lead pastor John Pruitt. “Anyone who is in need, if they can’t get assistance anywhere else, they can come up here.”

The Egg Church joins a list of other Triad churches and organizations who have started Blessings Boxes for the homeless and needy in their communities, like Blessing the Homeless of Rockingham County and Ardmore Moravian Church in Winston-Salem.

Pruitt says the church was inspired by Ardmore Moravian to start a blessings box of their own.

According to Feeding America, more than 1.5 million people struggle with hunger in North Carolina, a number that includes over 479,000 children.

To break those numbers down a bit more, that’s one in every seven people, and one in five children struggling with hunger.

“We know that a lot of the people that are maybe a little bit short of food are hidden, they’re not necessarily the ones standing in the food line,” said Kerry Kerr, chair of church’s Missions Committee . “This is just an opportunity to give back a little bit and give in a very open and friendly way.”

The blessings box is open to anyone in the community at all times: “24/7, 365,” as Pruitt puts it.

The church also welcomes any and all donations for the blessings box from non-members, as well.
