Read This If You Had A Significant Medical Cost In 2018

These uncommon deductions can get you even more money back on your tax refund.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A new mattress, Laser eye surgery, and a tutor. All things you or someone you know probably paid for in 2018. But depending on the circumstances, those things can get you extra money on your tax refund.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act lets you write off medical expenses. Specifically, those that cost more than 7.5% of your 2018 adjusted gross income. Unfortunately, 2018 is the last time that rate will apply. They'll have to exceed 10% of your AGI.

For now, here's a list of medical costs that can get you a deduction:

  • Laser eye surgery
  • Wigs prescribed by a psychiatrist to deal with anxiety about hair loss.
  • A special bed or mattress prescribed by a doctor to help with sleeping disorders or back issues
  • Remedial reading help for a dyslexic child
  • Batteries for a hearing aid
  • Herbal supplements prescribed by a doctor for migraine headaches.
  • New siding in a home dealing with mold.
