DURHAM, N.C. - A Durham man won $5 million with a scratch-off lottery ticket this week.

Bobby Matthews Jr. bought the lottery ticket on Monday night at the Fast Food Mart on Roxboro Road in Durham.

When he got home, he scratched off the $5,000,000 Mega Cash ticket to reveal his winnings.

“I was like, ‘Wow!’” Matthews told lottery officials. “My life literally just changed. We were so excited we couldn’t sleep. We were up all night celebrating.”

Matthews currently works at a staffing agency but says he is going to pursue a new career.

“This is going to completely change my life,” said Matthews. “I’m going to start investing in real estate.”

Matthews claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh, according to a news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Matthews had the choice of taking a $5 million annuity of 20 payments of $250,000, or a lump sum worth $3 million. He chose the lump sum.

After required state and federal tax withholdings, Matthews took home $2,115,036.
