YANCEYVILLE, N.C. -- A local soldier made the ultimate sacrifice and now a highway has been renamed in his honor.

A portion of Highway 86 in Caswell County became the 'SGT Coby Richmond Memorial Highway' on Saturday.

Sgt. Coby Richmond's mother attends the dedication service honoring her son.

Sgt. Coby Richmond enlisted in the United States Army on January 5, 2006. While stationed at Fort Bragg, Sgt. Richmond became a member of Transportation Unit 546, 32nd Sustain Mount Brigade where his primary responsibility was a truck driver (88M).

He was later deployed to Afghanistan and on August 25, 2011, Sgt. Richmond was killed after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) struck the truck he was driving.

Sgt. Richmond was the only child of Cynthia Richmond and the late Curtis Richmond. Sgt. Richmond has been the only citizen of the Yanceyville and Caswell County area to make the Ultimate Sacrifice during Operation Enduring Freedom.

A dedication ceremony was held Saturday morning at the Yanceyville Pavilion, in Yanceyville, to commemorate a portion of Highway 86, honoring Sgt. Richmond.

Representatives from the US Army as well as state and local officials were there as Highway 86 from Bartlett Yancey High School to the Virginia state line was dedicated as ‘The SGT Coby Richmond Memorial Highway’.

A Freedom Ride followed the ceremony along the dedicated highway.
