GREENSBORO, NC -- In conjunction with Guilford County, the City of Greensboro has opened a Disaster Resource Center at the Willow Oaks Community Center.
The American Red Cross and Department of Social Services are assessing the needs of those affected by the EF-2 tornado.
The community center, located at 1815 Everitt Street, is within walking distance to several of the impacted areas.
People impacted in any way by the storm can talk with volunteers at the center to get appropriate help. There is food and water available at the center. Many people who lost food when the power went out for days signed up for emergency food stamps. Others, who need home repairs or trees removed, gave their information to volunteers to be connected with agencies or organizations that can help.
Chuck Cotton lives on Ardmore Drive. A huge tree in his front yard fell onto his house during the storm. He also lost power for three days. He came to the Disaster Relief Center seeking assistance.
“They’re ready to give us food and clothing and shelter if we needed it,” he said.
But what he really needs is repairs to the home he's lived in for three decades.
“I’m hoping they’ll be able to come and remove this tree and help me with rebuilding this bedroom,” said Cotton.
The center will be open from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, April 21. But organizers say they could extend those hours if there's a great need.
On Tuesday, the city relocated the emergency disaster shelter to the Windsor Recreation Center. The shelter is located at 1601 East Gate City Boulevard.
It will be open in addition to the Disaster Resource Center.
