Guilford Co. Schools Calls On Lawmakers To Do More To Prevent School Shootings

The Guilford County Board of Education adopted a resolution that calls for stronger background checks, and opposes arming teachers.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford County Schools is calling on lawmakers to do more to prevent school shootings.

In a meeting Thursday night, the Board of Education adopted a resolution by a vote of 6-2 that calls for stronger background checks, more resources to prevent further school shootings, and opposes putting guns in the hands of teachers.

GCS says the resolution addresses gun laws, enhancing security, and proactive efforts to prevent individuals from becoming violent.

Among the calls for action are:

  • Requiring and strengthening background checks prior to purchasing firearms
  • Providing new funds to make schools more secure
  • Providing additional funds for mental health services and personnel in schools
  • Reviewing and strengthening the nation's mental health system and greater funding for community-based services and support for individuals and families

“A resolution provides a basis and a clear statement to the public about where the district stands on these issues,” said board chairman Alan Duncan. “The most important thing when our students go to school in the morning is that they come home safely, and that’s something we can all agree on.”

GCS joins districts around the country in adopting similar resolutions and reviewing their safety protocols in the aftermath of the Parkland, Florida, shooting that killed 17 students and staff members.
