Greensboro Police Officer Accidentally Shot With Own Service Weapon

Greensboro police are investigating after an officer was shot in the abdomen by his own department issued gun.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro Police say an on-duty officer is at the hospital after he was shot in the abdomen by his own service weapon. Police say the shooting was accidental.

No other details were released.

Greensboro Police have closed off a large area near Memorial Stadium for the investigation. WFMY News 2's Erica Stapleton reports there are at least a dozen police cars and officers in the area.

WFMY News 2 started getting phone calls about the large police presence on Yanceyville Street shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday. Several witnesses reported seeing 10 to 15 Greensboro Police cars and at least one Sheriff's Deputy cruiser in the area of Memorial Stadium and Park Avenue.
