GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro Police say an on-duty officer is at the hospital after he was shot in the abdomen by his own service weapon. Police say the shooting was accidental.

Greensboro police are investigating after one of their officers was shot with his own gun.

No other details were released.

An on-duty officer is being treated for an injury he sustained on the 500 block of Yanceyville St. at approximately 10:45 a.m. today. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the injury. His condition is unknown, and no further information is available at this time

Greensboro Police have closed off a large area near Memorial Stadium for the investigation. WFMY News 2's Erica Stapleton reports there are at least a dozen police cars and officers in the area.

WFMY News 2 started getting phone calls about the large police presence on Yanceyville Street shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday. Several witnesses reported seeing 10 to 15 Greensboro Police cars and at least one Sheriff's Deputy cruiser in the area of Memorial Stadium and Park Avenue.
