‘Damage To School Is Shocking,’ Hampton Elementary Sustains Extensive Tornado Damage

Sharon Contreras, Guilford County Schools Superintendent, said, "The significant damage to the schools was just shocking."

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Hampton Elementary school in Greensboro sustained significant damage after a tornado hit Greensboro.

Sharon Contreras, Guilford County Schools Superintendent, said, “The significant damage to the schools was just shocking.”

Contreras also told WFMY News 2, the school suffered extensive damage and it’s "unlikely they will be back in the school facility for the remainder of this year."

The school district closed schools on Monday due to a number of other schools that also had damage as a result of the storms.

Contreras said, “My thoughts are with the parents and we’re going to get through this.”

The school district plans to soon update parents and students with more instructions. They’re also planning food services for students impacted by the storm.

State Superintendent Mark Johnson issued the following statement after talking to Guilford County Superintendent Sharon Contreras about all the schools damaged by severe weather:

“The recent severe weather in North Carolina has affected families and schools. This evening I talked to Superintendent Contreras in Guilford County and assured her that we at the Department of Public Instruction will help in any way we can. We will be reaching out to other affected school districts Monday as well.“
