'100% contained' | Historic Worthville Mill fire in Randleman under control, fire officials say

The City of Randleman Fire Marshal said the fire is now 100% contained.

RANDLEMAN, N.C. — Update: The fire is now 100% contained and firefighters have cleared the scene, according to the City of Randleman Fire Marshal.

"There are still hot spot fires throughout the building but it is expected to die out considering the weather," said City of Randleman Fire Marshal.

Update at 8:30 p.m. : City of Randleman fire Captain Dillow said the Worthville Mill fire is 80% contained. Dillow said crews will stay overnight to monitor the fire since there is still a small fire inside the mill.

The old Worthville Mill in Randleman is on fire, according to the Randolph County Fire Marshal's Office. Multiple crews are on scene battling the fire on this Saturday evening.

The mill is located just off Worthville Rd in Randleman. There are homes within walking distance on the western side of the mill. It's bordered by water just to the east.

The Randolph County Fire Marshal's Office said the mill has not been operational for years.

The smoke was visible for miles Saturday afternoon. We captured video easily from our High Point weather camera more than 15 miles away. The smoke plume was thick enough to be spotted on weather radar as well.

Smoke will continue to drift southeast of the fire as it burns overnight. Air quality may be poor through this part of Randolph County.

Weather conditions are poor for fighting fires. "It's one of the coldest nights of the year," says WFMY Chief Meteorologist Tim Buckley. "Cold air is very dry, and a gusty wind makes it hard to fight fires like these."

A cause of the fire is not yet known. No injuries are known of at this time.

Please avoid this area while crews work the scene.
