Marine Corps Major's Dog Found Dead After Cross Country Move to NC

A Marine Corps major's missing dog, who escaped during a crash on Interstate 20 in Parker County earlier this month, was found dead Sunday morning, officials said.

WEATHERFORD, Texas -- A Marine Corps major's missing dog, who escaped during a crash on Interstate 20 in Parker County earlier this month, was found dead Sunday morning, officials said.

The dog, Cody, was a 5-year-old Australian shepherd.

Maj. Andrew Butler was driving from San Diego to his new base in North Carolina when his pickup truck was rear-ended on I-20 on March 2. During the wreck, Cody escaped his harness and ran away.

Butler's LinkedIn page says he's a 2005 NC State graduate.

Dozens of volunteers had been searching for the dog, and Butler, after spending several days in Weatherford to look for Cody, flew back to Texas from North Carolina this week to look again.

A person contacted Butler on Sunday morning with a tip that Cody's remains were near a Love's truck stop close to where the wreck happened. Butler went to the scene and found Cody's remains on the railroad tracks, according to the Parker County sheriff's department.

Butler will be returning to North Carolina with Cody's collar.

He spoke with WFAA earlier this week about the search for Cody, thanking the community for its support.

"It's been a little overwhelming, in a good way, to see everybody come out for a stranger they don't know," Butler said.
