WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A 'Promise To The People' rally was held in Winston-Salem Friday afternoon.
WFMY's Marissa Tansino said in the days leading up to the protest that organizers told her there were expected to be around 1,000 people at Friday’s rally.
The rally began at 5:30 p.m. in downtown Winston-Salem.
Hundreds gathered in the street to march.
"We need to know black lives matter to our police," the crowd chanted as it made its way through the streets of the city.
Hatasha Carter and her husband Nathaniel Spruill organized the event.
"I'm a mother to two little boys," she said, "I don't want that phone call saying they are not coming home one day especially because of someone who supposed to be out there protecting them."
Protests have broken out all over the nation, in support of Black Lives Matter demonstrations following the death of George Floyd.
"We still want our officers to acknowledge black lives do matter," said Spruill.
Protesters got there wish after calling on WSPD to speak. Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina Thompson came and spoke at the front of the crowd. “As long as you’re out here, we’re going to be here protecting you and making sure you’re safe,” said Thompson.
