Tubby Smith Inducted Into HPU Athletics Hall Of Fame

A new class of inductees is now part of the High Point University Athletics Hall of Fame.

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- A new class of inductees is now part of the High Point University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Coach Orlando "Tubby" Smith played basketball at High Point from 1969 to 1973. Smith is High Point's 7th all-time leading scorer.

Smith will start his first season as head coach at Memphis next season. In his career, he's won more than 550 games and led the 1998 Kentucky Wildcats to a national championship.

Smith got his start in the Triad, and says he wouldn't be where he is today, without High Point University.

"I owe everything, pretty much who I am [to HPU]," Smith said. "High Point helped shape and mold me, helped me change a lot of people's lives. It was because I was able to get an education and play basketball here on an athletic scholarship. It certainly inspired me to make a difference."

The 2016 class also included Marie Riley ('80 basketball/tennis/volleyball), Kitty Steele (women's tennis/field hockey head coach) and Roger Watson ('66 golf).

WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford emceed Saturday's induction ceremony.
