Portion of Oak Grove Church Road bridge in Winston-Salem permanently closing

NCDOT Resident Engineer Larry Shaver said the existing bridge will not be demolished.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to permanently close a portion of Oak Grove Church Road, including the bridge over Interstate 40.

It will close to traffic on September 19 between Meredith Drive and Oak Glen Drive as construction continues for the next section of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway

"The existing bridge will not be demolished initially, but as our work area expands past the bridge, public access to the bridge will no longer be safe," NCDOT Resident Engineer Larry Shaver said.

Drivers can use alternate routes including Sedge Garden, Union Cross, Glenn Hi roads. A second alternate route is Kernersville, High Point, and Glenn Hi roads.

"This portion will extend the beltway from U.S. 421 (Salem Parkway) and connect to I-40. There will be major improvements such as the widening of the Kernersville Road and Sedge Garden Road intersection," NCDOT Division 9 Engineer Pat Ivey said.

The eastern loop section is scheduled to be completed by spring 2027. Drivers should allow extra time and slow down while adjusting to the alternate routes.
