HIGH POINT, NC - High Point University has hired Tubby Smith to be its men's basketball coach.

Smith was introduced Tuesday at the school by HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein.

Smith coached Kentucky to a national championship in 1998 and later had head coaching stints at Texas Tech and most recently Memphis.

Smith was fired this month after spending two seasons as head coach at Memphis. Smith played basketball at HPU from 1969 to 1973. The University inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. Last year, High Point announced it will name the basketball court at its future arena after Smith.
