Police Chief Fired After Town Credit Card Used On Trips

Officials are looking into whether the Chief committed fraud after finding bills from trips and shopping sprees.

Kenly, NC -- Kenly officials fired their police chief after discovering the town credit card was used for weekend trips to the Outer Banks, shopping sprees and a cruise. Police Chief David Mangum was fired Saturday after officials last week found the $648 cruise on a bill. That followed charges over the summer for weekend getaways to the coast. Shopping sprees appeared on September's statement, officials said. "The last statement got everyone's attention," town manager Scott Shelton said. Johnston County District Attorney Tom Lock has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to look into whether Mangum committed fraud. Mangum became police chief five years ago in the Johnston County town of about 1,800. For now, Kenly Sergeant Josh Gibson has been placed in charge of the six-person police department.
