ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A Triad football coach has been let go from his coaching duties following a confidential personnel matter as of Friday, according to the Alamance-Burlington School System.

Southern Alamance High School Football Head Coach and Social Studies Teacher, Walter Friedrich Hessenthaler, also known as “Coach Fritz,” has been removed from coaching, ABSS said.

Alamance-Burlington Schools said additionally, Hessenthaler has been suspended without pay from his teaching role.

ABSS said once an investigation into the personnel matter has been completed, the Superintendent will then make a recommendation to the Board of Education on whether Hessenthaler can remain a teacher at the school or if he will be let go.

ABSS released the following statement after he was removed from coaching duties:

While we cannot provide details due to privacy and legal considerations, we want to assure our school community that this decision was made carefully after a thorough review process.

The values of ABSS include integrity, respect, trust, and the well-being of all students. We are committed to maintaining a safe, ethical, and productive learning environment.

We understand this news may raise questions. However, we hope you understand the importance of keeping personnel matters confidential. We want to reassure you that we remain dedicated to serving our school community with the highest standards. We appreciate the trust you place in us.

Chris Miller has been named acting head football coach.

Coach Fritz has been with ABSS since 2018 as the head football coach, according to the district.

ABSS said he also worked as an Assistant Coach for Southern Alamance High in the late 1990s and has been with the school system since 2003.
