NORTH CAROLINA, USA — This year... WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault

March 23, 2016, marked the beginning of a months-long conversation about bathrooms in the state of North Carolina.

March 23 is when the North Carolina House passed the bathroom bill.

It was in response to city anti-discrimination ordinances that let people use the restrooms of the genders they identified with.

But the state legislators said the local ordinances overstepped their bounds and violated people's privacy

So they wrote House Bill Two which specified schools, government, and state university buildings must require every multiple occupancy bathroom or changing facility to be designated for and only used by persons based on their biological sex

The bill led to a major backlash.

Multiple musical artists canceled North Carolina concerts, at least two companies chose other locations, the NCAA relocated championships and the NBA moved the All-Star game out of Charlotte.

In May of 2017, the state passed House Bill 142 which repealed the bathroom bill.
