76-year-old Eden man sets National weightlifting record

On April 6, 2024, Ronald Winter competed at the American Drug Free Powerlifting Federation competition in Evansville, Indiana setting a national meet record.

EDEN, N.C. — For Body Builder Ronald Winter, he’s lifted some of life’s greatest weights.

“I was in an accident in 2011, a drunk driver hit my wife and I head on," Winter said.

The Connecticut native said during the crash he turned the wheels of his car protecting his wife in the passenger seat.

“The doctors told us it probably saved her life, but I took most of the impact.”

Winter herniated two discs in his back. Doctors, at the time, telling him he’d never be able to weight lift again…a past time he’d been doing since he was 12 years old.

But, Winter was determined to prove them wrong.

“I gradually started working out.”

The Vietnam-Vet began bench pressing eventually training well enough to enter The American Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation Competition in Evansville, Indiana on April 6, 2024.

“When I joined the ADFPF I went on their website, and you see the existing records and I went and looked at the bench press and I thought I could do that," Winter said.

The record he had to beat was 110 pounds and that's just what Winter did.

The 76-year-old broke a National Meet Record bench pressing 67.5 kilograms which is 148 pounds.

And despite hitting a record, Winter says he's not done just yet.

"I want to keep going. I want to keep going in my seventies in my eighties there's guys out there still doing it," Winter said.

He's certainly proving your strength is not determined by your size or your age.
